Daphne Antique Armchair
The Daphne Armchair combines the craftsmanship of a mid-19th century walnut frame with a fresh upholstery scheme. Made by Hindley & Sons around 1850, the chair has been carefully reupholstered in Zimmer + Rohde fabrics, while a richly coloured Samuel & Sons fringe wraps the arms, adding a playful decorative flourish to the silhouette. Petite in scale and full of character, it is a charming occasional chair that slips easily into a bedroom, dressing room or quieter corner of a sitting room.
Founded in London, Hindley & Sons earned a reputation as one of the leading furnishing houses of the Victorian period, producing furniture, upholstery and interiors for an esteemed clientele. Holders of a Royal Warrant, the firm became particularly well known for its exceptional workmanship and richly detailed designs.
While many pieces by Hindley & Sons embraced the Gothic Revival style, the Daphne Armchair reflects a softer Victorian country house aesthetic. Barley twist detailing to the back nods to earlier Jacobean influences, while the padded back, sprung seat and castors speak to the comfort and practicality prized by Victorian furniture makers. The result is a decorative chair with a graceful presence, offering all the charm of a larger country house seat in a more compact form.
